Garuk Ironfist was born and raised in the unforgiving city of Ashdrift, a place where cruelty and violence are revered, fueled by the worship of Gruumsh, the one-eyed god of slaughter, as the foundation of society.
Like most orcs in Ashdrift, Garuk was indoctrinated from birth to embrace brutality, believing that strength and ruthlessness were the only true virtues. Garuk quickly rose through the ranks of the Ashdrift militia, known for his ferocity in battle and his unwavering devotion to Gruumsh. He believed his purpose was to bring glory to his god through bloodshed and conquest. Yet, even as he carved his path in blood, a small, nagging doubt began to grow in his heart. He couldn’t ignore the suffering of the weak, the meaningless cycles of violence, and the emptiness that followed each victory.
Everything changed when tales of a half-orc paladin named Ugarth reached Ashdrift. Ugarth, a member of the Allied Adventurers Associated, had achieved a legendary feat by slaying a dragon, but what captivated Garuk wasn’t just the act itself—it was Ugarth’s devotion to Torm, the god of courage and duty. Here was an orc-blooded warrior who fought for justice and righteousness, shunning the path of slaughter that Garuk had always known.
Garuk became obsessed with the stories of Ugarth, questioning everything he had been taught. If Ugarth could defy the bloodthirsty nature of orcs and embrace a higher calling, perhaps Garuk could too. He began to quietly renounce Gruumsh, seeking a new path, though he was careful to keep his doubts hidden from those around him.
However, before Garuk could act on his newfound convictions, Ashdrift’s fate was sealed. What some ignorant humans would view “As punishment for its unending evil and dark rituals,” the entire city was banished to Avernus, the first layer of the Nine Hells. Trapped in a hellish landscape, surrounded by demons and fiends, Garuk’s resolve was tested like never before.
The brutal environment of Avernus only intensified the violence and despair that had always plagued Ashdrift, and many of Garuk’s kin fell deeper into madness and savagery. But Garuk clung to the hope inspired by Ugarth’s story. He began to openly pray to Torm, seeking the courage to rise above the darkness of Avernus and the influence of Gruumsh. Amidst the horrors that surrounded him, Garuk began to act as a protector to his fellow orcs, defending the weak and vulnerable in the city. Still he faced scorn and suspicion.
His actions attracted the attention of fiends who relished the chance to break his spirit, but Garuk’s faith in Torm grew stronger with every trial. Garuk now walks a perilous path, caught between the infernal horrors of Avernus and his quest for redemption. He knows that leaving Avernus and finding true redemption will be nearly impossible, but he refuses to give up. Garuk dreams of one day escaping the hellish plane and meeting Ugarth, the half-orc paladin who inspired him to reject the darkness. Until then, he fights to protect those who cannot protect themselves, not for the glory of Gruumsh, but for the honor of Torm and the hope that even in the darkest of places, light can still be found.
